Machine trips mains RCd?

Our Indesit WE16 has started tripping the mains RCD on the consumer box whenever it starts to take in water before a wash. It can be used for spinning without a problem. This problem has just started and the machine has been fine for just under 5 years. Does anyone know what could be causing this please?

Thanks for the answers. I have put a tester on the element and it appears okay, so I would assume from your answers that it must be either the filling solenoid or a short circuit. I'll keep looking.

Thanks again.

There is a clue in the question...

"whenever it starts to take in water"

...which does not necessarily negate any other answer but may point to the solenoid that admits water.

check the heating element for a fault short circuit s/c the heater element could going to earth using the water as a connecting path.
find the wires that connect to the heater disconnect make sure they don't touch the casing apply power does the rcd stay in if yes element faulty

water leaking on to the electrics inside the machine or heating element faulty
