hot water tank over heated and overflowed into header tank then started to overflow over the top of header tank plastic ball float damaged. caused some damage to lights bathroom extractor fan ,smoke alarm.
is this because of hot water tank thermostat on the side of tank faulty.potterton ptt 100 thermostat

Sounds like the heat exchanger in the tank as failed allowing water into the tank and causing the overflow. get it checked out.
