How do I repair a hole in a patio umbrella?

I have a large patio umbrella. While I had the umbrella on the ground, a chemical spilled on it causing a hole approximately 5" in diameter. I would like to repair it rather than purchase a new umbrella. The material is 100% polyster. Any good patching suggestions (including ones which can withstand rain etc.)?
Thank you

You could try new fabric... relatively inexpensive

My Patio Umbrella fabric became old and tired (rotten actually) and I searched around on the web for a replacement - very difficult.

In desperation I called a well Known UK garden furniture manufacturer who sold them but not to the general public. I asked my local garden store to buy two of them for me - I had to pay shipping costs too.

In short each of my two polyester, rain-proofed 3M x 2M fabrics were a mere £24 each!
