Re:Thomson DT16300 Digital TV Recorder (stopped working)?

I can't switch it on, it just tries to reboot itself by going through the LED sequences, but when reaching the solid Red LED stage, instead of switching on it freezes and goes through the same procedure. Can't use remote, unplugged it, still makes no difference Can anyone help?
Joe, May 2009
Thought I'd share this with you.. David did a good job explaining how to fix our boxes, and I think this helps understand exactly what he said. Hope he doesn't mind ;)

My Thomson recorder has been out of order the same as everyone else's - since Sun, May 3. Have tried all the methods suggested, but still haven't been successful - any more suggestions? The amber light stays on continually, then small coloured lights flash (green & red), but still no red stand-by light or green on light will appear.

Heather, May 2009
The same thing has happened to me today(4/5) Got it going again after using David's suggestion, but I have lost all my saved programmes.

Kath, May 2009
I tried David's way about 15 times with no luck, then tried the up, down, left, right method and if you keep trying it after the amber light first comes on then eventually the red light comes on. I've lost all my recordings but at least its back working.

What a joke that company are though, i hope no-one ever buys any of their products again, i know i won't.

Lee, May 2009
had same problem - but David's fix worked a treat! Had to wait for a few minutes whilst it sorted itself out, so be patient, but don't appear to have lost anything.
Thanks!!

Paul C, May 2009
Finally its back on and I'm not sure what actually did it! I had tried all the suggested methods. The time it worked I pulled out the mains lead and holding the standby button I put the lead back in and instantly pressed up, down, left then right, then as it started to light up I decided to repeat up, down left right sequence and within a few seconds the light turned red and I knew it was working. As someone else said all the memory has been wiped. But which action made it work I dont know, perhaps it makes no difference it will just set itself up when it is ready or just a part of my actions set it off!

Jane, May 2009
I'm with you Em, i've been trying all the different ways people have listed below all day and mine still wont start up. Its just ridiculous that so many people are having problems today. Thomson and TopUpTV really are just the worst.

Lee, May 2009
I'm fed up with Thomson too. I can't get mine working no matter what I try. Flashing amber light which then stops with smaller flashing green one below. Tried all the tips mentioned so reckon this machine is heading for the local one! Any ideas on what next to try or do I give up & buy a reliable model?

Em., May 2009
Sorry it should have been to JMW, my first time Ive done this but I am so fed up with Thomson

Jane, May 2009
Darren which lead did you take out was it the mains or scart or arial

Jane, May 2009
Same problem with my box todat (4th May). Thanks Dave your fix worked on the third try.

darren, May 2009
Hi, I have just got my box working again by taking lead out of DTR for 20 secs then while holding the standby (on front panel)button at the same time replace the lead, then hold button in until you see a red light flash, then in sequence press - up down left right on front panel. I received this info from the topup tv website in the help section. Good luck

jmw, May 2009
Hi All,
I am fortunate, I have not had the same problems as yourself, although my father has. I have the 250GB, and he has the 160.
I am not sure it is a software issue, unless it is in the transmission. I currently run version 3.59, and my other image is 3.59 (No going back to 2.99 for me if it goes wrong !!). Just to check I manually forced an update (1397 in the help, trick) which probably took around 10 minutes. It rebooted and is still fine.
My father managed to restart his with the 2.99 image by switching it off and using the answer supplied by David from the topup site.
He is going to wait a while before he tries the 3.59 again !
Regards

Nigel., May 2009
Just used David's method, and it has worked first time. Thank you David
Andy

Andy, May 2009
i've tried Dave's way about 6 or 7 times with no luck. Just trying Karly's for the 4th time, fingers crossed it starts working soon.

Just emailed topuptv as well to tell them this is without doubt the worst electrical item i've ever had the misfortune to own. Part of me hopes it really is broken so i can go and buy a freeview recorder that actually does what its supposed to.

Lee, May 2009
still trying, done dave's instruction 5 times still no luck!!! Any other help out there.

AF, May 2009
Hi,
Having the same problem the box would't turn on at all. Just managed to get through to technical support after two days of trying.
You need to turn the box off at the mains and leave for 10 seconds, then turn back on at mains, continuously hold the standby button on the box in until you get a solid amber light, now you need to press the up, down, left, and right arrow keys in that order, then the standby button on the control and then dtr button. It can take up to about 9-10 times of trying apparently, but worked for me after 3 attempts. Remember after each attempt you must turn the box off at the mains. Hope this helps.

Karly, May 2009
Thanks Dave, I was experiencing the same problem, but using your suggestion it now seems to work OK.
For anyone else, you may have to persevere with the front panel until it shows red.
Three cheers for the web!

JTL, May 2009
Mine has also stopped working. I have done what David has suggested, but as yet no luck. Will keep trying.

jmw, May 2009
same thing happened to mine 3/5/09,just done the software re-set working again

dave, May 2009
Done what you said dave and it workes finally after two hours! You're a star!!

Thanks x

Claire, May 2009
mine has gone the same tried everything nothing is working

marg peet, May 2009
Brilliant, well done Dave. Tried your method and worked second time.
It's got to be an upgrade problem, affected to many people more or less the same time.
Always having small problems with this product, it's very temperamental.
Thanks again

Joe, May 2009
Just wanted to say thanks to David. Mine had the same problem as those above, and after couple of tries of that method it seems to be back again. No guide yet, but hopefully that'll install while its on. Just hope all's ok tomorrow, but thanks loads for that post.

Fiona, May 2009
I tried the fix and it worked the 2nd time.

Thanks

Stuart, May 2009
finally got is going thx to this method

shaun afc, May 2009
got mine working by using the reset method, tried it a few times and didnt seem to work but turned the power off at the wall for 5mins then when i turned it back on it worked. hope this helps

laura, May 2009
Same here. I've tried the reset method, but I can't seem to get my box to revert to the previous firmware version.

I've also tried the helpline at 9:40, when they're meant to be open, but my call was disconnected.

Any other suggestions?

Matty Brown, May 2009
The same thing has happened to me, it seems to be having a mind of its own. Been doing this amber light flashing for about 2 hrs!
Has anyones been fixed yet?

Kim, May 2009
My box has now been off for about two hours 3/5/09. I've tried ringing two different help line numbers and my call gets cut off before I can actually speak to a human! Getting very fed up now!

Becki, May 2009
Same happened to me, wasn't working this morning (3/5).
Tried the above fix, all OK now.

Cheers David

Tony P, May 2009
It worked! After following the instructions it took a minute or two to go from amber to red but it's now working again. Hope you get yours working too!

David, May 2009
Just read this on www.topuptv.com - haven't tried it yet but worth a shot!

"If the power light on the box will not change from solid Amber to solid Red then it is possible that a problem has occurred with the current in use software. Before attempting a fix, power the box off and on at the power socket and then wait at least 10 minutes for the solid RED lamp to appear.

If it still remains solid Amber and the box will not come out of standby to ON (Green light) then this can be corrected using the software revert procedure which is done using the box front panel buttons as follows:

1. Remove power to the unit by removing the power cable from the back of the box.

2. Wait 20 seconds and then restore the power cable while holding in the standby button on the front panel of the box.

3. Release the standby button immediately when you see a lamp flash on the box's front display, and then immediately press the following front panel arrow buttons in this sequence:

- Menu
- OK

Note: you have to do this quickly and in sequence

4.The Orange light will flash and the STB will then reboot and should return with the previous version of software.

5. The box will now be running with the previous software version but it will automatically update with the latest version within approx 2 hours and you will be notified by message which will appear in the Message area within the Main Menu.

If you're still having problems please call 08444 159 159 and a member of the Technical Team will be happy to help."

David, May 2009
Mine has just done the same too (approx 7pm on 3rd May 2009). It can't be a coincidence that all these boxes have stopped working at the same time. Perhaps its a software update thats gone wrong?

David, May 2009
mine has done the same, maybe the boxes expire all at the same time ?!?

anny, May 2009
exactly the same thing has happened to mine. Anyone any ideas?

ron, May 2009
Mine has done this today - 4th May! It's driving me crazy!

Stuart, May 2009
exact same thing has happened to me today(03-05) been messing about trying to fix it away to throw it out the window soon
