Thomson DTR?

Amber light of death on our Thomson at 19:45, 3rd May 2009.
Have tried resetting by the unplug method, but am getting repeated reboots, then amber light, one flash of all three smaller lights, then the small green light flashin about 10 times... It then loops through it all again, and again.
Claire, May 2009
Nat, Thanks for that. Thought I was going to have to do a full re-boot and lose all my recordings, but just holding the power button while I plugged it back in got rid of the stupid message and blank screen I previously had. Well done.

YorkshireClematis, October 2011
hi i tried to watch a recording or record a programme and its sayin WARNING!! you do not have a working hard drive, ive tried reboot it bt no joy PLEASE HELP !!!!!

NAT, August 2011
In case the problem you have is that the unit has been turned off for a while and when turned on makes a humming sound and has no lights (and if connected through a scart has a flickering black picture with white band). Turn off the unit and wait 20 secs then plug on again holding in the power button on the front of the unit. - That worked for me. It came on again with a red - green light sequence then OK - no reset required. No soldering required and no landfill!

Beechie, August 2009
I have gone through 3 thompson boxes now and they have all had the same problem If anyone is fed up with them then i reccomend contacting Consumer Direct they have advised me that top up tv are in breach of contract under the supply of goods and services act. I have also contacted watchdog i got a email from top up tv earlier and they said that as my box is out of warranty then i could get a free box but only if i signed up to a 12 month contract or bought 1 for £49.00 and these boxes were not even brand new just reconditioned. How stupid to top up tv think i am i have told them that i dont want another 1 of their boxes no matter what one they offer let alone be in a 12 month contract its time they stand up and are held accountable for their actions and start paying back some of the money which we work hard for. If everyone contacts Consumer direcct and threatens action they will have to hold their hands up. LETS DO IT EVERYONE lets get them shut down!!!!!!!!!!!!

adie cook, May 2009
i have had the same problem with two of my DTRs! I've had the boxes for less than a year and already encounterred many problems. Now ive lost all my recordings and top up tv expect me to be OK with that. Thats it with top up tv im complaining and contacting watchdog.

ONE WEEK AFTER THE BOX STOPPED WORKING,WE GOT A TEXT MESSAGE FROM TOP UP TV TELLING US THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH OUR BOX.

SUSAN, May 2009
Hello all.

I came back from holiday on sunday 2nd May to find the thomson boxes just completley rebooting. Nothing worked so took it back to Argos for a new one as under warrenty,
When i went in on bank holiday monday in weston super mare there must of been 20 people inthe que with thomson boxes that had all broke over the weekend,
Asda in weston had over 15 boxes as my freinds had to take them back aswell and told me about the que.
It must of been a downloaded fault as so many boxes had been effected, but all quiet from thomson when asked what was happening.
Hopefully thomson will admit how many boxes went down that wk end and how many people have been forced to buy a new one through no fault of thier own. Check with your friends and family and see if they have had similar problems.

(",) James, May 2009
Took a lot of attempts and very frustrating, but it does work.
Thanks everyone!

Tracy, May 2009
go to the tutv website and use the "stuck in Amber light" method from the help centre tab. Ignore the telephone helpline advice and use the one i've just mentioned.

naughtyneil, May 2009
Hi

I have had exactly the same problem since Sunday

Kate, May 2009
Be patient when you have finished the reset procedure as the red light did not come on immediately after the flashing green light stopped. It took me 7 tries but, if I had waited longer between tries, it may have actually been less. All recordings and scheduled recordings were still there.

Barbara, May 2009
you av to be very quick,as soon as you see a blip of colour up down left right,i did it on the dtr box buttons, also it says on the top up web page turn power off by the box connection on the back for twenty seconds dont throw the box away it can be salvaged good look........

graham, May 2009
cheers the prob was solved by the fourth attempt thanks everybody

graham, May 2009
Managed to get through to thomson this morning
hint:don't go through to tech just go through as though you are a subscriber! & want to add channels to your Top up TV! believe me it saves time in getting cut off!
Lovely girl there was able to tell me that as I purchased my box in Nov 2007, I was out of warrentee. And that as mine was a continuos flashing red light then it was a corruption on the box! I asked about wether it was something they had downloaded onto my system on the sunday night! as there appears to be alot of customers with problems, she told me mine was different! ;o) & could not be fixed! so therefore need another box...just wondering if there is anyone else out there that has experienced the same as me????
Off to buy another box but definately not a Thomson!

maria, May 2009
Go to Top Up TV website, look under "Help Centre" then "Troubleshooting" there is a fix for it.
http://www.topuptv.com/help+centre/setup+and+troubleshooting/#Fail+boot+up

Yorkshire Mafia, May 2009
Mine crashed while watching a recording on 4th May, now back up and running thanks to info above. This must be a problem with the box as i have never used the top up tv facility.

Rainey80, May 2009
Was elated last night when i finally got my box to work using the procedure given below - Thanks for the help syl. However i turned my tv on this morning and the stupid thing has wiped the whole of my library clean, it was still there after re-booting yesterday! Also left it recording when i went to bed last night, and woke up to a message stating the recording has failed! Anyone else or just me

Nicky, May 2009
same problem, same solution but my software is now version 2.99 and won't upgrade. I wouldn't care but the "teletext" pages all look fuzzy now!! Any ideas?

Barking Bob, May 2009
WORKED AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS - DON'T FANCY DOING THIS EVERYTIME IT FAILS!

HD, May 2009
I have to say how very patient people are. This product seems to be a pile of s..t and to expect people to perform this kind of operation to get the thing working is unbelievable.

Everyone should take the box back to wherever they bough it and demand a refund

Unhappy of Anywhere, May 2009
have the same problem may 4
but i have big fingers and cant press the buttons

but trying for some time now works

thanks all

simon young, May 2009
Excellent, thank you it also worked on mine so saving me buying a new unit.

Mark, May 2009
Tried this several times before it worked, so keep trying, it should fix the problem

Allen, May 2009
Just when I was about to give up - attempt 8 - it worked using the handset - thank you David!

Yvette, May 2009
Tried reverting to the old software many times no with no luck. Dont really want to resort to wiping the thing clean.

Simon, May 2009
followed software reset instructions - finally successful at 7th attempt and didn't lose any recordings

pfc40, May 2009
i have this problem also but l was wondering before i do all what david has suggested is, Does you freeview make a whirring noise, mine is doing it all the time and i was told its the Hard Drive gone.! Its only 14 months old.

Dee, May 2009
Worked woohoo!!!! Followed procedure on www.topuptv.com - Help, been at this for hours tried several versions, this worked but still needed 3 attempts you need to press the buttons very fast!

AF, May 2009
Thank you to everyone who replied - the steps worked - it took us 3 goes with 2 of us on a hair trigger by the buttons, but we now have Digi TV back (and thank goodness - all our recordings!)

Claire, May 2009
Thanks David, I had exactly the same problem, your fix worked first time.

mlin, May 2009
Had exactly the same problem as Claire described.

As I had purchased the Thomson DTR from Aldi, I telephoned the support telephone number for the DTR given on the Aldi web site. I found this 0871 number useless as it appeared to be a phone number for top-up TV and not Thomson (never actually spoke to anyone before I was cut off!!), hence I resorted to the internet for help...

..and thank you, problem now resolved with the advice given.

Given that several users have suffered a similar fault in such a short time makes you wonder whether the software contained a 'time bomb' or similar; or just another software bug!!!

How many others suffer from the DTR crashing when deleting a recorded program? Now I never delete a program when the DTR is recording another program otherwise you lose the new program as well.

Thanks to all.

PJF, May 2009
this just made my bank holiday monday worked for me too......thanx

collin dyas, May 2009
thanks david.
worked for me too on 4th may 2009.

syl, May 2009
The following fix worked for me -

"If the power light on the box will not change from solid Amber to solid Red then it is possible that a problem has occurred with the current in use software. Before attempting a fix, power the box off and on at the power socket and then wait at least 10 minutes for the solid RED lamp to appear.

If it still remains solid Amber and the box will not come out of standby to ON (Green light) then this can be corrected using the software revert procedure which is done using the box front panel buttons as follows:

1. Remove power to the unit by removing the power cable from the back of the box.

2. Wait 20 seconds and then restore the power cable while holding in the standby button on the front panel of the box.

3. Release the standby button immediately when you see a lamp flash on the box's front display, and then immediately press the following front panel arrow buttons in this sequence:

- Menu
- OK

Note: you have to do this quickly and in sequence

4.The Orange light will flash and the STB will then reboot and should return with the previous version of software.

5. The box will now be running with the previous software version but it will automatically update with the latest version within approx 2 hours and you will be notified by message which will appear in the Message area within the Main Menu.

If you're still having problems please call 08444 159 159 and a member of the Technical Team will be happy to help."

David, May 2009
Same problem...try procedure outlined on www.topuptv.com then go to help menu......solid amber light problems.....Be patient you may have to try this more than once. Fortunately it worked for me!!! DTR up & running now. Good luck!
