How do I repair jeans ripped in the crotch under the zipper by either hand sewing or machine sewing and which is better?

Depends on what kind of rip it is. If the seam separated, just re-assemble it. But if it is a tear, you could try darning it. Best to use smooth thread. A great tutorial for darning is here: http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2009/03/darn_it.html or you can Google "how to darn".
