How to stop a Vaillant water heater cutting out?

I have an 'old' (1980's) Vaillant water heater, powered by propane. It fires up ok but cuts out after seconds or sometimes a minute or so. This happens at low, medium and high temperatures. Is there an easy remedy to this?
