when i insert a tape it plays but there is no picture only the sound will be heard.

I would clean the video head it as the sound is not picked up from this they have seperate sound heads

check your rca cables on the back

Scart or standard UHF jack connection from tv to vrc? If Scart, it could be a faulty lead. If UHF antenna connection, I would try a retune. Failing that, I wouldn't like to comment without further information.
