my grandfather clock chimes 3 minutes after the hour or quarter tried all ways to reset to no avail

Ian, if your clock is less than 50 years old it should have a bushing in the hand. This will allow you to put something in the square hole in the hand bushing and move the hand on the bushing. This will allow you to adjust the hand several minutes in either direction. You may have to do several adjustments to get it right. Put the hand on with the hand nut tightened each time to get an accurate test.
