Dear Jason. Here is a real shocker for you. Most bike companies only put in around 5 ball bearings instead of the full 8/9. It might be wise for you to undo your bottom bracket if you can and count EXACTLY how many ball bearings there are on BOTH SIDES inside the part where the pedals meet upto the ball bearing cage. It is likely that the ball bearing cages are either shredded to pieces (I would say the F word) and then buy replacement cages if necessary. As a tip make sure you also remember which was you replace the ball bearing cages as I've often put them the wrong damn way and causing more damage. It if helps buy some engine grease and put that onto the ball bearing cages and this makes them work better. Lithium grease is usually used but often it doesn't have good imapact and where I use normal engine grease the bike runs like a train on tracks and not a snow plough through a swimming pool. You may have to purchase everything to take off your bottom bracket but if you learn to do it yourself it'll save you bundles. I must admit I still can't do damn buckles.

Sounds like your rear mech isn't indexed properly. If the bike is new take it back to the shop and have them fix it.
