i am putting in a new drywall ceiling over the old one in my bathroom the existing cable is going to be to short it will be very difficalt to fit a new one so is it possible to extend the existing cable.
Ken Parsons's advice contravenes regulation 526.3 of the 17th Edition wiring regulations.
Just something for you to consider.

If it is only an ordinary light fitting would extend the cable via a 5amp connector wrap it well with insulating tape, and make sure it is between the two ceilings with only the new cable coming through.

Unless the joint is accessible you would need to extend it using compression crimps.
