No more suggestions I'm afraid - my silly first response was based on personal experience - I am always dropping crumbs and splashes of drink on my laptop's keyboard - it's a regular thing that a key begins to misbehave.

If you have no recollection of spilling something and notice no debris under the key - and the key moves freely when assembled - and you cleaned it up with an old toothbrush when you had the cap off....and it still doesn't work...

Then it starts to smack of a failing keyboard i.e. you may have to send it for repair :(

The shift key now starting to play up is also concerning - I only wish there was something positive I could say - but sadly there isn't.

Dear Major Beef,

You may find that the keys on your computer that are failing to work have become contaminated with cigar ash, spilt whisky or the crumbs of your breakfast kedgeree - or someting similar.

As the two keys are adjacent to one another on the keyboard the contamination event may be from a single incident.

It is possible to remove the key caps and gently clean the keboard surface - if your eyesight is weak a watchmakers' eyeglass or Loupe will help because the parts are small and fiddly - perhaps a pair of fine tweezers too.

Detailed instructions with pictures can be found here...

I wish you good luck in making the repair.

I have the honour to remain Sir Your obedient servant...
