IMac G5 not going through whole start up process?

I've had my IMac G5 for about a year now and just recently I've noticed that when it starts up, it stops half way through and just goes to the desk top where the pinwheel will sit for about 45 seconds and then the tool bar and the dock pop up. Everything seems to run ok, accept when I click on programs in the Dock, they start up slower and my internet take a really long time to find pages but once the page is found they load very quickly. It's just very odd. The only thing that is different is that I unplugged the Cat5 cable so that I could use it with a PC lap top and then plugged it back in to my G5. Since then I've been having this problem. Any help would be much apreciated.

Did you unplug the cable when the iMac was on? If so this can cause problems (like slowing it down). The reason for this is because it will scan the ports at start-up and continually while it is on. You also connected the cable to a windows system.
If you never switched the PC Laptop when you switch the cable back to the iMac then the router/modem needs to be restarted.
Try This:
Switch off your iMac. Switch off your modem/router.
Wait a couple of minutes.
Disconnect the cable from the iMac and then put it back in. Ensure it is fully inserted into the port.
Switch on your modem/router. Wait a minute for it to fully start-up.
Now switch on your iMac.

it's connected to the Router, which is connected to the Firewall, which is connected to the Cable Modem

Still not sure what the cable is. As I said Cat5 describes a cable specification and 'Internet cable' still doesn't help. What is at the other end of the cable: Modem, Router, workplace LAN, etc. I now that this is in the modem forum but people often put things in odd places.

Sorry, it's just the internet cable. I unplugged it from the back of the G5 and plugged it into the laptop so that I could use the internet with the laptop, then plugged it back into the G5.

Not sure what the Cat5 bit is about. Cat5 is a cabling standard. It could be connected to anything. Can you expanmd a little.
