Can I wallpaper straight onto bare mdf or will the paste just soak into the mdf?

Dont do it. You must prime/seal it first, if not the wallpaper will stay on the wall. To prime I often use a cheap latex/emulsion paint, its best applied with a paint roller, wait at least 24 hours before you start wallpapering. Good luck
