how do i clean pump on whirlpool AWO/D 4505?

tHE RED LIGHT HAS COME ON ON MY WHIRLPOOL AWO/D 4505 WASHING MACHINE TELLING ME TO CLEAN THE PUMP, BUT I HAVE NO MANUAL. CAN YOU HELP?
PHIL, October 2009
I have the clean pump light continually coming on, and my Westinghouse washing machine stops and won't continue spinning. I have cleaned the filter and it didn't correct the problem. I removed the hoses and cleaned but was distracted by my toddler and am no longer sure how to place the ping pong ball back into the hose (ball on the drum side of the pipe insert or under the insert and on the pipe side). It doesn't seem to fit in a set place. Any help would be most appreciated.

Had the same problem, red clean pump light on. I just followed the above instructions, washing machine working like a dream again :) make sure you have PLENTY of old towels and bowls though!

Hi all, I have done everything suggested above, but the "clean pump" light still comes on. Any more suggestions?

Grant, October 2012
I followed the advice on this forum of putting the washer face down and taking the hose away from the pump. I found a sock, cloth and an action figure's sword! It was really easy and the washer works brilliantly now. Thanks for the advice

Ref; solution by Debbie (January 2011) - it worked for me too on an AWO3551, but slightly worried I've not put the black pipe back on securely enough at I have no plumbers tools so simply used a tea cloth on the grip and squeezed hard to release, and then put back. Have done 2 washes without a problem so far.

Cleaned pump and all the pipes and still the red light comes on. Any ideas?

Hi Kev, I didn't take too much notice of which way the seal and plastic ball was into the large end of the hose, your help would be appreciated as the machine is now making a very loud noise like the plastic ball is knocking on the drum, cant seem to work it out.
thank you

Unplug your machine, turn off water supply. Unclip the plastic trim panel across the bottom of the machine (front) to reveal the circular pump filter cover. Unscrew this cover with your fingers and remove any debris inside (I have a pen cap inside). Lay machine flat on its face(on an old pillow or similar to stop any damage to the front of the machine). Remove the spring clip one/two side and check whether any debris. Make the machine straight and fix the pump filter. Wait for some time and switch on the panel. Should be fine. This is my 21.08.2011 day experience.

unplug machine lay flat on back for 10 minutes ,after which i will fix your machine.

I tried unscrewing the pump filter but this didnt stop the red light from coming on. So as suggested, I lay the machine face down and unclipped the black drain hose on the drum and found 2 small socks. Plugged the machine in again and machine works perfect now. P.s: the black hose drains the entire drum so have some bowls and towels ready before you unclip the hose!

The machine states Clean Pump but there is no manual, how do I clean it

Hi there. I have had the same problem! I cleaned the filter but still no joy! So my husband and i tilted the machine and unclipped the pump on one side. Low and behold we found a sock blocking the pump. We removed it and the machine is now working as good as new!!!!!

Debbie, January 2011
Turn off the water supply to the machine, unplug from the mains supply.Lay machine flat on its face(on an old pillow or similar to stop any damage to the front of the machine).Unscrew and remove the tin backing plate. At the bottom of the drum on the right hand side is the pump unit. There is a rubber waste pipe from the drum to the pump held at either end with a sprung wire clip.Compress the clip with a set of water pump pliers and slide back along the waste pipe then release,do the same with the one below the drum and remove the pipe completely.Inside the large end you will find what looks like a table tennis ball. This is a non return valve to prevent waste water passing back into your machine. In the case of my machine the area inside the pipe around this ball was full of slimy crud which was reducing the amount of water getting from the drum to the pump.Put everything in the sink with warm soapy water and cleaned up.Refitting is the reverse of removal, just make sure you get the pipe on securely and don't puncture or rip the pipe.It worked on my machine, hope it works for you.Best of luck, and be careful as I am sure the panels are made of old razor blades!!!!

Kev, January 2011
It says CLEAN PUMP - not sure why people assume that means clean filter.

George, December 2010
this does not stop the light coming on.

cb, December 2009
hi i cleaned the filter put it back together again, and for some reason it short fuses the whole house, can someone help?

flo, December 2009
I've got this problem & the red light (clean pump) still keeps coming on after removing & cleaning the filter cover & inside. There didn't seem to be much rubbish, but the waste water stinks. Any further suggestions, please.

TCM, November 2009
Unplug your machine and unclip the plastic trim panel across the bottom of the machine (front) to reveal the circular pump filter cover. Unscrew this cover with your fingers and remove any debris inside. Put the cover back on, clip the panel back on and try your machine again. Should be fine.
