Can a hole in a guitar affect it?

I have a hole in the bottom of my guitar & my dad said not to mess with it anymore because it won't play right. Is that true? Will it affect the sound that my guitar makes?

It will make the sound resonate differently, but as long as the hole isn't too large, you should be ok.

An electric guitar - you can make holes all over - the shape is of no consequence - an acoustic guitar, violin etc depend on the sound box and the holes in it for the sound quality.
