while writing my touchpad pointing device jumps all over the page?

i have a compaq laptop...the pointing device jumps all over the place

Your fingers (balls of the thumbs probably) are brushing against the touchpad as you type.

If you use a mouse as a pointing device rather than the touchpad there are Software Mouse drivers that can be set to automatically disable the touchpad whenever a mouse is plugged in.
