How can I set limits for a Masterlift 850 Garage Door?

I've just installed a new LifMaster 850 belt driven automtic door opener, but I can't set the limits. Each time a try this as per the instructions, both automatically or manually I get the flashing light error message, (light flashes 10 times), and the opener doesn't LEARN the limits.
