Not at all. Glad to be able to share some info. I had to buy a new one myself recently as the plastic cap which holds the batteries in, had sheared off.
The new model has been developed further! When you switch it on, the tip flashes red intermittently like a strobe light. When you place it near a live part (e.g. just put it beside the rocker on an ordinary domestic light switch, while in the on position) or more importantly a bare live wire, the tip (which is white usually) glows red continuously. It switches itself off after 5 minutes but gives a high pitched beep to let know when it does it!
I think it's the best thing since sliced bread. Very handy when you have to change a light bulb in a hall where there is 2 way switching - now you can be sure it's switched off when you go to take out the bulb.

Living in the dark ages me... I shall buy the Fluke device as soon as I see one - thanks...

Better still use a continuity tester and do it with the circuit isolated.

Better still get a non-contact voltage detector - e.g. there is one made by FLUKE. The tip glows red if held in proximity to a live component - doesn't even have to touch it!

Go to the nearest DIY store and buy a Mains Tester Screwdriver - couple of pounds at the most. Get a short length of Red Sleeve too.

A neon in the screwdriver's handle will faintly glow when the tip touches a live conductor and the operator touches the other end - quite safe honestly.

Connect all the Reds and disconect all the Blacks and have them hanging down. Set the light switch to On and test each Black in turn - One of them and only one of them will make the neon glow. If none lights the neon throw the switch the other way - it may have been set to off. Switched Live should light the neon when the switch is set to On - the neon will go out with the switch set to Off.

When you discover which is switched live, slip a short length of Red Sleeve on it but turn the power off first.

Take care...
