Where can I get a modern day conversion kit to fit this size of cut out to bring lamps up to date.

Even better (assuming the lights aren't on dimmer switches) you can get Genura R80 lamps - absolutely superb things, better than halogen or regular incandescent and better than CFLs.

Don't be put off by the price (about £20 each) they are worth every penny.
