Copy over some old VHS tapes that seem to be locked?

My son wants to copy over some old VHS tapes that seem to be locked (for example he wants to copy some camera footage over a Strawberry Shortcake video no one watches). Is this possible? These tapes do not seem to want to let him, but it seems a shame to not be able to recycle these tapes.

Thank you!

did someone remove the tab on the back of the vhs tape? If so just cover the space with a piece of tape.

If you look at the back of the tape(opposite end to the flap)you will see a small square hole to the left hand side, cover it with a piece of sticky tape.If you have one that isn't protected you will see that it has a plastic tab covering the hole, you snap these off when you don't want a tape overwritten.
