how do i replace bathroom spotlights?

how do i replace spotlights in a bathroom? i have prised the circular metal ring from the ceiling but the spotlight is encased in a cylinder. i am unsure how to proceed.....help!!!

im taking a slightly different angle here from adam, im thinking the light fitting is a fire rated downlight, which is good, ive made a few quid with this problem because its quick and easy to resolve, the fitting usually comes with a little suction cup to turn the lamps (lightbulbs) into the fitting, just press your thumb and forefinger against the lamp and push in and anti clockwise at the same time, then do the opposite to put the new one in , in and clockwise.
hopefully this is what your problem is and its now been resolved.

By "circular metal ring" do you mean the one which covers the edges of the hole? If so that should be fixed to the cylinder, so the cylinder will now be loose in the ceiling.
The easiest thing to do might be to get above the fitting from the loft, otherwise try to line the cylinders up with the hole in the ceiling and try to pull it out with a pair of pliers, spring-first, without bringing down half the ceiling. If that is not possible, disconnect the light above the ceiling and push it to one side.
