i locked the door as normal from the inside, and on trying to unlock it the handle will not go down and is jammed is its normal position. The key will turn in the barrell as normal and the handle will lift up freely but it will not go down. I have tryed this also from outside, how can i open the door. There are stainless steel pins through the hinges but im not sure how to take them out or should i leave them well alone.

it sounds like the lock has bust out of the mechanism housing. Try forcing the handle down when the door is unlocked this should get it open. Then if you take the lock out take all the screws out and remove the handle and barrel (you will need to wiggle the key and push the barrel from the other side at the same time) after doing this you will see the part of the lock that has bust out and move it back in. This will only be a temp fix you'll need a new lock. Hope this helps.
