line output crackled then fizz.In dark it can be seen to be arcing onto the h.t lead.also stuck in standbye mode, fantastic equipment would love to have it working again.

Replace the line flyback transformer. As you say it is a nice set and well worth it but ensure the connector under the rubber cap is discharged before removal as it holds a charge for some time. I use a 1K resistor wired with crockodile clips on both ends with one end connected to a insulated screwdriver and the other attached to the metal wire attached to the back of the tube with springs.
