Netgear Router Problem?

I have installed a Netgear GSM2000 router on my PC. I install the software but it says that the router is not connected. The router is connected via a LAN cable.I have the TCP/IP settings on automatic and the operating system has just been installed. If I do a IPconfig enquiry it shows no IP address. Prior to this I had a US Robotics modem which worked perfectly. Any thoughts please as this is driving me crazy !

There is no software to install to get a Windows based PC talking to a router. Plug the two together with a suitable cable and the PC and router will just talk.
