Close couple toilet continuously fills with water. ?

My close couple toilet started to continuously fill with water which then over runs into the pan. There is a ball float and this is attached to the overfill/ flush unit. I don't think the ball float will do anything on a close couple system as it's not connected to the valve unit in any way? When I flush the 'float' section on the valve moves down and then up but there is no water cut off. If I move the float section up and down it doesn't stop the flow of water. To stop the water flowing in I unclipped the ball float from the overfill/ flush unit so I'm surprised this made any difference! I think the valve unit needs replacing as the flusher part seems to work why? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Peccavi. I did post a thank you y'day but it doesn't seem to have been sent. I'll try adjusting the float valve first as maybe it has worked loose or something. Still strange why the ball float is in the cistern as it is definitely only connected to the syphon! Thanks for your advice!

The float is the control element for the valve - they would not go to the bother of fitting a float if it had no function as you seem to suggest.

The float rises on a pivoting arm and applies movement via a nylon adjusting screw to the inlet valve - sometimes the "rubber" in the valve has perished but more usually it just needs adjusting and the lock nut tightening on the screw to maintain the setting.

The ball/float does not attach to the syphon/flush unit as you state but to the water inlet and control valve assembly.

Judging from the text in your question you may not be interpreting the function of the two main components correctly - the flush syphon attaches to the operating handle - the float attaches to the water inlet valve.
