Hi
I have a Onn 20 inch TV with similar a problem. The standby light flashing, a ticking noise coming from the set, but it will not come on. I have had a look at the capacitors on the power board, but none show any signs of "Bulging". Is there any way of testing them?

my baird cn55bair keeps going on standy and when i turn it off at wall its still got 2 reds lights for about 20 seconds and so i turn it back on and goes on standy again

kayleigh, September 2012
On any TV , check the capacitors , look for raised surfaces , replace those capacitiors , generally it is better to increase the voltage rating of them , as that is generally the issue , under rated components , keep the farads the same up the voltage : eg 10v blown change to 16v etc etc...

i have the same problem re tv stuck on stand by. Its a baird 52inch, no idea which model. Theres only 1 electritians company in my town an they are wanting 45quid just to 'look at it.' no chance am payin that, how much would the want to fit it? 10grand! Jokes aside. I need held and any would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Just fixed a 32" ONN TV that wouldn't come on.

It was a 10uF 50V capacitor under the top heatsink. Better to replace on the back of the board as its cooler.

The 68uF caps are for the 5V (always on) standby supply. It would prob work with just the one.

The power unit is actually quite good but would be more reliable if mounted sideways as it would run cooler and these caps would not be so much in the line of fire.

Hi Kevin, still around? I have a 20" Asda set with this problem. There are only 2 boards tho'. The one at the bottom seems to do power, tuning, video and audio. The other has a bunch of wirewound things on it - inductors ? Are you familiar with this set up? If so can you give and advice? ( Thers are about 70 electrolytics scattered around this board, none gold coloured.)

hi ive got an onn tv that is stuck on standby ive got the caps to fix it but there is a metal cover over them how do i remove the cover to get to them or how can i remove them without taking the cover off please help me ive been trying for ages

rachel, August 2011
We had same problem as thread starter. Eventually I found the manual and read it! Apparently they are on standby unless they are unplugged. We now unplug the tv overnight etc and it no longer sticks in standby.

chris w, August 2011
To kevin if your still here i would like to thank you as you just help save my onn lcd after replacing those two capacitors alls good for now :).For those who need theses capasitors heres a link http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16V-680uF-105-C-electrolytic-radial-Capacitor-X-2pcs-/120530568418?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item1c102e84e2 . Also so easy a soldergun a good screwdriver and 20 mins is all it takes and i was a bit put off by taking it apart due to electric shock when i was younger so with a bit of research before i started opening it up i found out this just to make sure to be carefull as there high voltage even when unpluged would advise to wear rubber sole ie trainers take care taking out the psu not to touch any main big parts then once out decharge the big main 450v capacitor depending on the unit this may differ you can decharge this using the old 100w light bulb trick youtube should shed some light on this method

Dave M, May 2011
I got the caps, replaced the ones you described to replace. Just tried turning on the TV and it is doing exactly the same as it was before. Why does my TV still not work?

kevin, November 2010
got the same problem with mine found that if you leave it on standby for a while then switch it on and off from the wall socket it will eventually come on

davidh, October 2010
it is the same with the xbox 360 ring of death put a towel over it for an hour or so then it will work

brendan, August 2010
my 32 inch onn lcd is around 2 and a half years old and is now stuck in standby mode, as it was out of warranty i took a look inside and foud there was a surface mount resistor missing (r230 incidentally) and scorch marks on the power supply board, the quality of the surface mount solder is awful and would explain why this happened , whoever done the touch up on the soldering obviously had other things on there mind like the labrador they were having for dinner that night.

scotty p, June 2010
mine will go green for a few seconds then turn off again was working a few days ago

kaitomagic, May 2010

our QNN TV Lasted just over 2 years ...out of warranty ofcourse..exact same problem as you guys..isnt there something we could do about this issue legally ??

harpol, March 2010
what to dopam

pam, March 2010
Im having the exact same issue! only had the thing for 24 months also, did the hair dryer work? have you managed to fix the problem?

Danielw, March 2010
I could have written the exact same thing. Ours is 32inch ONN LCD TV that wont turn on. Just the red light at the front that wont go green. Rang Asda techinal phone number who basically didnt want to know. Only had it 24 months. Might go Trading Standards. also tried turning off at mains etc but no joy.

another annoyed Mum, February 2010
Try warming the back of the set up for 5 mins with a hair dryer, if this works you have a heat damage fault, dry solder joint, or a failing component and it needs to be taken in for repair
