If you want to transfer your 8mm tapes to DVD it is rather easy. You can buy a 8mm to VHS adapter on amazon for $1.95 and yes that is 1 dollar and 95 cents up to $60. Plus shipping. This will get it to your VCR. Then what I use is Pinnacle Dazzle studio HD with video capture tool. I use this and I love it. I have only used it for about 3 weeks but I am VERY happy with it. I have already transfered stuff off of my moms DVR with it to DVD. Really good quality. I tried an Adesso brand capture device and I could not get it to work. You can get the pinnacle Dazzle at best buy for the same price as online and they usually have it in stock. You can also buy a 8mm tape player but they are much more. Either way your going to have purchase 2 things to get it to DVD in a good quality. I would recommend they method that I use. All in all you could get what you need for about $150 - $200 and once you have it you can transfer anything with the dazzle device that has RCA composite connections or S-Video. I bouth the HD because it was only $10 more than the basic Dazzle capture device. Just to let you know though if you do get the Dazzle device you will need to get a set of RCA plugs. (3 plugs) video, Right Audio and Left Audio. I will attach a link to the Dazzle device that I purchased. I am not sure if it will come through or not but if it doesn't then just go to bestbuy.com and search. Pinnacle Dazzle HD. Don't pay attention to the reviews on Best Buy. Those are from people who don't know how to see if it compatible with their computer. Just make sure that you have all of the system requirements for it. Here is the link. I hope this helps. I also use my dazzle to caputer video from my video games online to catch people cheating. It works great.
