on the back of a dimmer I have l1 l2 plus what looks like an x?

when I am fitting a double dimmer do I put a jump lead from l1 to l2 but do I take x as the common line

use the "x" (it's actually a sine wave with a line through it) and L1. Leave L2 empty unless you have a 2 way switching arrangement (2 switches controlling the same light).
