Ideal Elan 2 40F boiler?

Hi all,

I have an approx 15 year old Ideal Elan 2 40F boiler which was in the house when we moved in. A few days ago the heating and water came on in the morning from the timer then after around ten mins the flame on the boiler went off and radiators went cold. I could also smell a burning plastic/electrical smell when standing near boiler. If i switch boiler off at spur switch then on again it seems to reset boiler and fire it up again but it then cuts out again when it reaches the room thermostat temp then doesn't come on again in response to demand for water or heating!

I can hear the fan working ok but no ignition or flame when this happens. Also the lights for the 'low' or 'high' setting go out, when before they used to stay on depending on what is selected! I'm wondering if it could be the PCB?

Please help!!

I have just had exactly the same problem with an Elan 2. Found that one of the relays on the PCB had melted. I got a replacement re-furbished board from CET Ltd. Watford. £ 45 including next day delivery. Took approx 10 - 15 mins to fit and now everything working perfectly.

It was a faulty PCB in the end, one of the relays had melted on the old one, i suspect your boiler trouble may be caused by the same thing!

Finally found the red reset button on the top, was hidden by dust, gave it a good old clean!

Hi Pete!

Where exactly is that reset button on the boiler? I have looked before and cannot find it! Is it to the side of the boiler or on the front?

I have ordered a new pcb and getting it fitted soon, will let you know if it cures the problem!

The boiler was working fine for a year since we moved in but a week ago it started playing up and have had no heating since then, brrrr!

Also do you know where i can get a manual for this boiler? Can't seem to find one anywhere!!

Will keep you posted!

King regards

Alex

Hi,

I have one of these boilers too (currently trying to ascertain it's energy rating to see if it qualifies for the scrappage scheme). I suffer occasional cut-outs when the setting is on high and it's doing both water and CH which can be cured by pressing the little red over-temp reset switch on the top of the unit (did you know it was there?). I'm not sure whether toggling the mains like you've done resets it too so it may be a different issue (the symptoms - no flame and the LED's going out are the same however).

I can tell when it's about to do it because the boilers working hard - it get's quite noisy when it's doing this.

Of course if it is the overheat t/stat there may be a genuine reason for it tripping other than it being faulty. There is the matter of the burning smell you noticed for example.
