Unlocking a Sandisk memory card?

The slider on my Sandisk 8 GB card is in the unlocked position, yet my camera tells me that there is a memory error....the card is locked. I have moved the slider up and back to the unlocked position, but the camera is still saying the card is locked. How do I unlock it?
