You do not mention the make & model of your boiler - on my old boiler when there's a call for heat from the programmer the fan runs then the pilot light lights then the main burner fires up - yours may be different.
A specialist will soon diagnose and repair your problem. If you have a hot water tank with a working immersion heater you can at least enjoy hot water - if you have a "combi" boiler you will not have this emergency back-up.
