how re-install inset ceiling light housing?

Went to replace the floodlight bulb in the kitchen ceiling light, and was having trouble unscrewing it.
So I pulled down on the metal housing rim around the light, which gave my hands more room ro get up in there and more easily reach and replace the bulb.
Now I can't figure out how to get the housing to stay back in.
I thought some kind of spring would have held it in place, but for the life of me, I'm stumped.
There are these metal wire loops, one on each side, up inside the housing, but the rim doesn't evenreach up to it.

Well, I fixed it myself, basically. Those wire looped things up inside the housing pull down, but I couldn't get them to attach to the rim for nothin'.
Dunno if they were sprung or I'm just stupid or some of both.
It's a pretty old fixture...
So, twist tie technology to the rescue!
I attached a twistie, snugly, one to each side, at the bottom where the loop is and through a slot on the inside edge of the rim thingie, and then slid it up and voila! Let there be light!
And it should be safe 'cause the twisties aren't touching the light bulb. They are separated by the tube of housing around it.
Phew, are my arms tired--ceiling lights are tough!
I have a new appreciation for electricians!
