Locking mechanism does not slide far enough up the door?

Help help help please. When I lift the handle of the door the locking levers do not go to the top. I can lock the door on the key but I am unable to remove the key from the door when locked. The same thing happens when I do it with the door in the open position ! any suggestions would be appreciated.
