panasonic dmr e55?

I have a Panasonic recorder DMR E55 It plays O.K.from a pre-recorded disc.But when I put a blank disk in to record, It won't read, the measage says"This disc is not recgnised" How do I fix it please?(Iv'e cleaned the laser)

Try formatting the disk. I did this with a Toshiba Recorder and it worked.
