when i am putting new dvd so that i can record off tv it is telling me to check dvd and that it can not be played, i have always used dvd-rw today i also tried dvd+r and dvd-r but it is still saying the same, it will play a film but i can not record anymore can anyone help

Try formatting the disk first. It worked for me on my Toshiba VHS/HDD/DVD recorder.
