The patio door lock just rotates with no unlocking of the door?

I have a problem where the patio door will not unlock, the key goes in but just does a full 360% turn, We've managed to get the lock out through drilling but this does not solve the problem, i assume the locking mechanism on the length of the door has dropped, how do i get the door open to repair it.
