Different colour wiring?

I have just bought a ceiling light and I am confused by the wiring, old property.
On the light it looks straight forward brown(live) green/yellow(earth) and blue(neutral), Simple if the colours corresponded with the 3 wires coming from the ceiling!!!
From the ceiling I have 2 x black wires and 1 x green wire, 1 black and the green are in a poly block (separate) and the other black was not used on the old light (the old light was just connected by 1 white wire from it). Hope this makes sense.
The light will be controlled by just one light switch.
Any idea what way to wire it up?
Be great if anyone can help.

Hi thanks for your advice but I have worked it out.

What you do is one of the blacks from ceiling goes to brown/live, the green from ceiling connect to both the green/earth and blue/neutral. I just had to connect the green and blue together on light first. (very old building).

At least I know I will never forget this.

could just be when you've taken down/ moved the light the wire has broken - happens due to wire been brittle or over tighenting - but there's no obvisious reason - you could try touching the wire you fine to be N on the earth and it should trip the breaker- PLEASE EMPLOY A SPARK IF UNSURE .

Thanks, mitsi44

Just wondering do you know why one of the blacks was not used in old light, dont fiftings always need to be connected to neutral?

hi one of the black will be a switched live and the other will be neutral - put a test light on one of them and turn the light switch on - if nothing try the other - the green will be earth

Yes, the black will be the neutral so connect that to the blue on the fitting.

Thanks but I have 2 x black and 1 x green coming from ceiling, does anything have to come connect to blue/neutral on the light? Thanks for help

It sounds like you have American (or dc) wiring but a European fitting.
Try:
Green - Green & Yellow
White - Brown
Black - Blue

.... And see what happens.
