thanks for the reply i couldnt see any problems with flue which i thought it had. the part of the flue where the combustion air comes in is almost enclosed apart from at the bottom. I had a good poke around and couldnt find anything. so i put the casing back on and for some reason the boiler worked ok after i had not done anything different to the last 4 times taking boiler apart strange. what seal could it be that maybe corrupt?

I would suggest you haven't checked the flue thoroughly, if the boiler works okay with the case off (not recommended), then the issue is definitely the flue.
Either not enough air supply from the outer flue, or corruption between inner and outer flue (maybe seal). This would cause the flames to baffle and as you describe, put the boiler out.

Definitely a flue issue.
