my RCA dvd recorder won't open and it won't turn off?

The tray won't open and it dosen't turn off it stays on the hello screen. How can I fix it myself without have to pay for it?

i had the same trouble one time with another recorder and i unplugged from the mains gave it half a minute or so and then plugged it back in and it worked ok
