I have just bought a 2nd hand Bosch 1400 WAA28160GB washer. It runs but it will not complete a full cycle. I have tried various programs but it seems to stop in different places.
I have managed (somehow) to get is to wash, drain and spin by playing with the program dial over a period of about 2 hours.
Any ideas would be most welcome?

It sounds like timer fault which would write your machine off.
However, before giving up on it, replace the motor brushes. They can be cheaply bought off ebay or your local domestic appliance place. I would guess that 80% of wmc problems are worn brushes or hair clips jamming the outlet pump.
