My mother in law is having a firebird enviromax combi c20 installed and the installer has left her with heating but no hot water and then the next day hot water but no heating can anyone help the installer seems a bit of a clown or is this common or are c20s good boilers

If you employ "cowboys" to do a cheapo job, expect problems. If you can trace Bodgit & Scarper, get them to come back and fix it. Another tip is, dont pay in full until your satified with the work that's been done, or you will be, well and truly done.
