How can I re-connect a handle to the locking mechanism?

I can't lock my UPVC door. Unlocked the door with my key as per usual but when I lift the handle to lock it again, it does not release the catches and therefore I cannot then lock the door with the key. I can manually push the catch on the side which then release them but obviously that's no good as the door needs to be closed first.
