is it possible to bypass the old fashioned timer/programmer with a digital one by conecting up the wires from the back of the one fitted to a new digital one say screwed to the wall close by?

Don't see why not as long as you where each wire goes to and the digital timer has equivalent connections. I've just replaced a wall thermostat for a digital one and is far superior with regards to accuracy and switching on before temp goes below set level.
