cable?

I want to watch dvds on my tv through my Toshiba lap top.I've been told I need a vga to hdmi cable but I can only find dvi to hdmi cable.Is this an upgraded version or are they two different cables.

There's no such thing as a VGA to HDMI cable. You have been told wrong.

For a start, VGA is an analogue signal and HDMI is digital. In other words, they are very different signals and can't be connected by a simple cable.
