After talking with Moto tech support I discovered a way to reinstall the firmware, which I believe is the same thing as reformatting. First download the firmware update version 1.11 from www.broadband.motorola.com. On the home page just click on Digital Audio Players & you should see some links for both of Moto's players. Now be sure to have the usb connection in place & recognized by your pc. By holding down the "menu" button on the orange border of your display & pressing the power button briefly you should see the "motorola" logo & then the word "upgrader". (This also works by holding the toggle button on the side of the player in the "menu" position.) Once upgrader is on your display you can run the firmware program. Once it recognizes your m25 follow the on-screen directions & your display will say "writing". If that doesn't work then the player is probably worthless, much like the one I own which can only display a padlock symbol.
