What language is set for your keyboard?
Make sure that it's set to "English (UK)".


If you can't type it directly, here's how you do it:

Hold the "Alt" key and hold it down.
Type 156 on the numeric keypad.
Release the Alt key. £
¢ is 189
¥ is 190
