how can i get my stannah 300 to work again?

my stannah 300 stairlift suddenly quit working, after using it for months with no problems. it is stuck at the bottom of the stairs and after hand cranking it moved only a few inches up. toggle switch on armrest and remotes work in down position only which brings it back down the few inches we cranked it up to. what could be the problem? my husband is mechanically knowledeable and would like to fix it himself.

Hi Linda
it sounds like the up limit switch is stuck these are switches that only stop it going up, the stairlift has a series of safety edges, which are located on the footplate, carriage. these stop the stairlift from bumping into things and also for stopping the lift at the top and bottom in its correct position. Check they are all free and not clogged with fluff if a switch is activated it thinks its at the top and will only go down.
The reason it stopped at the bottom is it went to the top the switch got stuck or broke and then you went down with a broken up switch and stopped at the bottom if you need any help just reply

hi.......common problems with all battery run stairlifts are the main carriage batteries which only last approx 3 to 5 years in some cases less.......one of the tests to confirm it is the batteries is as you have done already and that is hand wind lift up so far and call it back down..this will be testing lift not underload....first i would checked to see if spur supply is switched on as this can be switched off by mistake and drain carriage batteries......let us know if this helps.......regards
