The handle seems to have gone limp and it wont lift enough to enable the key to turn all the way round to engage the lock mechanism fully. What do I need to fix/replace?

when the door is open lift the handle and check all the cams and or hooks are engageing fully if not check for anything stoping the free movement of them sometimes wd40 will help unfortunately if this cannot be done it usally means the gearbox needs replacing and you will probably need a door repair co.

Even with the door open the lock will not engage fully. I lift the handle but it will not lift enough to enable me to turn the key all the way to the locked position.

Door needs adjusting, screw top hinge adjuster back & bottom out to life door sash. Don't false handle you will only damage lock & that will be mega bucks.
