My Kenmore washer doesn't agitate or spin! I don't have money to call repairman - so I need to make repairs myself. Where should I start? Are there any tests that I can take on the machine to determine the problem through process of elimination? There were no problems that I was aware of before the machine stopped working.

It could be as simple as a broken or loose belt off the motor or it could be as complex as a motor or transmission.

Try having a "fix-it" type repairman come look at it ... they are usually cheaper than Sears. But if all else fails... considering the age of the machine... you might want to consider buying a new or rebuilt machine from a used appliance dealer.
